Sinus Lift

For patients lacking sufficient bone for a dental implant to replace a maxillary back tooth (upper back tooth), a procedure, which is known as a "sinus lift" or “sinus augmentation” is often recommended. The purpose of this common oral surgery procedure is to increase the amount of bone between the maxillary sinuses and the jaw to support successful dental implant placement.

Depending upon the needs of the case, one of two types of sinus lifts may be performed:

  • Lateral Window Technique (Direct Sinus Lift Procedure): This method of care involves cutting out and pushing a defined section of the overlying dental bone against the sinus membrane to elevate it. The space that the dental bone and sinus membrane previously occupied is then filled with bone grafting material. Afterward, the area is given several months to heal. In select situations, a dental implant can get placed at the end of this procedure.
  • Osteotome (Indirect Sinus Lift Procedure): This alternative approach to regenerate bone for implant placement may be recommended when the sinus floor requires less elevation and more natural bone height remains. It’s a less invasive method that involves cutting a flap of gum tissue and forming a socket in the bone. Then a special instrument known as an osteotome is used to deliver and condense the bone graft material, while gently lifting the sinus membrane. This procedure accomplished localized sinus elevation with minimal surgical trauma. This procedure helps facilitates immediate bone graft and implant placement.

Following a sinus lift procedure, patients may experience some swelling and bleeding. Our office will provide complete information on post-op care, follow-up visits, and any precautions one may take to support optimal healing.
